There are a few folk customs in Iceland that appear far older than they are but have nevertheless been absorbed into folk culture. One of these is a garment known as a

lopapeysa

and was actually invented in

the 20th century

from

foreign design

. They regained popularity after

the financial crash

in

2008

. Another not-so-old tradition is a type of festivity known as

Þorrablót

and it was first celebrated by Icelanders in the year

1873

in

Copenhagen

.

There was a large survey undertaken about folk-belief in Iceland in the year

1974

and later in

2006

. It was found out that belief in

ghosts

had risen since

1974

from

33%

to

37%

and that belief in ghosts

decreased

the younger they were

. The folklorist

Terry Gunnell

believes this might have something to do with the influence of

Hollywood films

.
