Auditory system keeps track of where information originated on basilar membrane (beginning with nerve fibre). Throughout the auditory pathway sound frequency is mapped within the processing centres and on surface of auditory cortex (Tonotopic organisation)

Firing of action potentials in auditory nerve fibres synchronise with peaks of sound waveform. Phase locking (firing locked/synchronised to particular phase of sound waveform). Time between action potentials tells us about the frequency of the sound.
