replacement of lost tissue by granulation (looks different), tissue which matures to form scar tissue, healing by tissue that does not completely restore architecture or function. tissue lost is not reconstructed, phagocytosis of necrotic matter, proliferation of fibroblast, endothelial cells/new circulation formed, new fibrous scar formed.

minimal destruction/damage. rapid and simple regeneration. scarring minimal. granulation tissue minimal. no tissue has be lost. tissue regenerates across gap. blood clots broken down. every layer fits. less likely to have bacterial invasion.

extensive destruction. trauma involving: gingiva, pdl, bone, teeth. usually occurs with open wound/lots of tissue loss. presence of ongoing damage/infection. granulation tissue. scar formation (look different). re-epithelialisation less complete. healing from base of wound outwards. blood clot forms base of wound outwards. blood clot forms to prevent bacteria getting into wound. blood clot then granulation tissue then scar tissue.
