- increase plaque retention and stagnation in certain areas - acquired: calculus, extrinsic staining, ledges of restorations, partial denture, oral piercings and orthodontist appliance (some easily modified and some not so instead OHI should be given) - anatomical: developmental grooves, over crowding, partially erupted teeth, mouth breathing, occlusal trauma (not as easily modifiable so OHI instead)
