What is an allergy? What does Atopic mean? What do allergens do? Different types of hypersensitivity? Cross reactive allergens?

- hyper sensitivity caused by proteins called allergens e.g pollen/ dust - someone who has a predisposition to produce IgE antibodies stimulated by B-lymphocytes. - allergens activate B-lymphocytes to stimulate IgE antibodies which have an affinity for Basophils - Type I: immediate. IgE mediated degranulation of mast cells and basophils due to subsequent exposures releasing heparin/ histamine e.g asthma/ hay fever Type IV: delayed. enhanced cell mediated (T cells) immune response e.g contact dermatitis - 2 different objects with similar proteins that cause the same reaction e.g latex and banana
