Executive body, headed by its President (currently Donald Tusk). Consists of heads of states of member states and the High Representatives for Foreign Affairs and Security. Defines the general poltiical direction and priorities of the EU.

Executive body with considerable political clout, is "the guardian of EU Treaties". Plans policy and proposes new laws to achieve aims of EU treaties. Made up of 28 Commissioners (1 from each member state). Departments of the European Commission are known as Directorates-General and are allocated to portfolioes looked after by one of the Commissioners.

Legislative and executive body, which works with the European Parliament to pass laws proposed by the European Commission. Passes secondary legislation in the form of Directives and Regulations (legislative). Coordinates economic and police and judicial policies of Member States. Also makes international agreements w/non-EU states. Also works with European Parliament to approve the EU budget.

Elected law-making body with legislative functions. Made up of 751 MEPs. Can propose changes to EU treaties, along with Council of the EU can approve, amend or reject secondary legislation (including Regulations and Directives). Also, must approve EU budget (along with Council of the EU), approve appointment of President of the European Commission, must approve membership of European Commission as a whole.

Judicial body made up of 28 judges and 9 advocates-general. A General Court assists by hearing more straightforward cases the Civil Service Tribunal deals with EU employee disputes.
