I chose my history day topic by narrowing down my choices. Originally I had two topics in mind, the Nuclear Strike and the Battle of Athens. After researching both of these topics I realized that I had great-grandparents in World War II, and I decided to choose the Battle of Athens because I wanted to interview them and find out more information from people who lived in that time period. I have a lot of admiration for veterans and people serving in the military, and World War II is a time period I find very interesting. The thought that a group of veterans returned home and basically had to fight for their own freedom after fighting for people in other countries to have freedom was really interesting.

World War II Veterans returned home from fighting a war overseas to discover they had another battle ahead of them if they wanted a fair say in their own government. A battle ensued when the veterans rebelled against the corrupt sheriff and mayor who were manipulating the election results how they wanted them to go, regardless of what the citizens had actually voted for. This rebellion resulted in the compromise of a new election being held in which uncorrupt politicians were elected. This was a monumental event in history because it proved that the American government can and will be held accountable for its actions.

I also went to my school library and our local public library, but I was unable to find as much information there as my online sources provided.
