Relieved anxiety of pensioners and families and allowed some to regain their independence.

Limited number of workers suffering from rickets and black split as they were spending less time in the dark, damp mines. So meant that it was less likely that workers woud have to take time on sick leave in which they would be in danger of falling into poverty.

Gave ill workers an income, helping them say out of poverty when unable to work.

Ensure children in poverty were properly fed and could therefore concentrate at school as they weren't starving.
