Relational approaches is where relational turbulence is the cause of interpersonal conflict. Relational turbulence occurs when relationships are in transitional phases, most commonly upon the discovery of new definitions and behaviours of the partner in the relationship.

Individual-difference is when the conflict is caused by differing perceptions about what the conflict is about or whether it even exists. What one person finds perfectly acceptable, another may not. A person's commitment to an interpersonal relationship will influence sensitivity to conflict.
