The iodine-tyrosine residues are coupled to Thyroglobulin (Tg) to form either Mononidodotyrosine (MIT) or Diiodotyrosine (DIT)

MIT + MIT = T4 (Thyroxine)

Iodine is trapped by the follicular cells of the thyroid in response to TSH

The trapped iodine is oxidized by peroxidase and bound to tyrosine residues

The T3 and T4 complexes are released from the follicular thyrogloblin by proteases

MIT + DIT = T3 (Triiodothroine)
